Season Dates: Monday, November 28th - Thursday, February 9th

Dear Families:

It gives me great pleasure to announce that basketball and cheerleading will be offered to the students of Galvin Middle School for the 2022-23 winter season. An interest meeting for winter sports was held on October 13th and 14th where over 200 eager students attended. Since then, I have met with various students in a focus group to discuss the layout of the season.

VISION:

To provide students with positive team building, social collaboration and fun through basketball and cheerleading. In addition, most students will boost their academic performance and self-confidence as well as building relationships and positive friendships. Goals: Making More Friends, Team Building, Representing GMS and HAVING FUN!

RECREATION BASKETBALL 2:20 PM - 3:20 PM:

Students are assigned to an intramural team for the duration of the season. Every student assigned to a team will play in one hour games each week. There will be 25-minute running clock halves with a 3 minute halftime.  Due to the higher number of boys in attendance, there will be two divisions, one which plays on Monday and one which plays on Thursday.  Girls will play on Wednesday. All games will be played 2:20-3:20 PM.  Rosters and game schedule will be made over the next week.

BULLDOGS SELECT TEAM:

There will be a select team derived from players within the rec league. These players will be our GMS Select Team (all-stars) to play a season of 8 games against other schools including St. John (Canton), RCMS (Randolph), Boston Trinity (Hyde Park) and Foxborough. These 8 games will consist of 4 games at home and 4 games away. Reversible jerseys will be provided to the Select Team while players should wear their own black shorts. Rosters will be determined one week before the first game. The very first game is a host game on Monday, December 12th vs. Boston Trinity. The full game schedule will be provided before the Thanksgiving holiday.

CHEERLEADING:

All GMS students are welcome to try out for cheerleading. In order to be considered for the team, interested students must attend both tryout dates on Monday November 28th from 2:15-4:15 and Wednesday November 30th from 2:15-4:15.

The final roster will be announced via email on Friday December 2nd after school.

Cheerleaders will attend all home and away games for the Bulldog Select Boys and Girls Teams. Both the cheerleaders and players will travel together. The final game schedule will be provided by next week.

To prepare for all games and receive uniforms, practices will be held for the team from 2:15-4:15 on the following dates: Monday December 5th, Tuesday December 6th, and Wednesday December 7th.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR:
I am the Dean of Students. I am responsible for making sure that all students are safe as well as motivating students to make good decisions at school. If any student isn’t following classroom and overall rules and expectations at GMS, she/he simply cannot participate in this program. In addition, I am looking to see that participating students have good attendance at school, are focused on their grades, demonstrate positive behavior and have lots of fun playing basketball and cheerleading.
