Math 7 is designed to be a rigorous course that utilizes the enVision 2.0 Common Core math series to address the Massachusetts Common Core Standards. The Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for Mathematics identifies four critical areas of focus in Grade 7: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples. Students who exhibit proficiency in Math 7 will continue to Concepts in Algebra in 8th grade, while students who exhibit mastery in Math 7 will be considered for Algebra I.

PRE-ALGEBRA

Pre-algebra is designed to be a rigorous course that utilizes the enVision 2.0 Common Core math series to address all 7th and some 8th Grade Massachusetts Common Core Standards. Due to the addition of selected 8th grade standards, this class moves at an accelerated pace, requiring students to achieve proficiency in concepts more quickly than the traditional pacing in Math 7. Pre-algebra is ideal for motivated independent learners who have demonstrated exceptional mathematical achievement in grade 6 and require minimal outside support. There will be an emphasis on Algebraic concepts while addressing essentials of Expressions and Equations, Ratios and Proportional Relationships, Geometry, Statistics and Probability, and the Number System. Students who exhibit proficiency in Pre-algebra will continue to Algebra I in 8th grade.

CRITERIA FOR PLACEMENT IN PRE-ALGEBRA

  • Unit Assessment grades of at least 90% in Grade 6 Math (A average).
  • A Scholastic Math Inventory score of at least 970 (Advanced/Above Grade Level).
  • Recommendation from Grade 6 teacher.
  • Exhibits independence and personal responsibility for learning beyond the classroom.
  • Exceeds Expectations (530 and above) or, at a minimum, High Meets Expectations (515-529) on the most recent MCAS test.

MATH EXTENSIONS

Math Extensions courses are for students concurrently enrolled in grade level math who need additional mathematics instruction to be successful. The course is designed to reinforce concepts from the grade level curriculum as well as to strengthen students’ mathematical reasoning and problem solving skills, improve their ability to communicate mathematically, and make use of recognized test taking strategies. Math Extension meets 3 times per cycle and will therefore be graded by semester. This course is not an elective. Space is limited and enrollment is based on students’ prior efforts and achievements in math, MCAS scores, and teacher recommendations.
