Dear parents, caregivers and families,

Thank you for your patience and support as we work to navigate uncharted territory and stop the spread of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We understand that having children at home and out of school for this duration will be difficult.

To help slow the spread of this disease, we all must adhere to the guidelines issued by the CDC, state and federal authorities. We must all practice strict social distancing. This is a crucial step to protect yourself, your family and loved ones.

Please do not organize or allow your student to participate in in-person social gatherings or play dates.

If you must leave your home, wash your hands frequently, use hand sanitizer and avoid "high-touch" areas. COVID-19 remains on objects for days. Sport and leisure activities that involve an exchange of physical objects such as balls can spread the virus. We know this is very challenging, especially for kids who want to be with their peers, but we are living in an unprecedented time, during a global pandemic.

It is critically important that we find ways to connect and stay close, but please do not do it in person. Until testing is widely available, it is almost impossible to know who may be impacted. People in all age groups are at risk. Please consider the lives of others and your community before gathering with others.

While we certainly understand this situation is not ideal, we are proceeding with the well-being of the entire Canton community and world in mind. We encourage everyone to closely follow information from The White House, U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Massachusetts Department of Health (DPH) and World Health Organization (WHO), and exercise good judgement and caution as we work to stay safe, flatten the curve, get our schools back in session and our way of life back to normal.

This is both a sprint and a marathon. The Canton School Department is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic with a variety of strategies aimed at ensuring the health and safety of our students, faculty and community with an initial focus on getting critical services up and providing opportunities for our students to engage and remain active with learning, but it will take time and we expect details to evolve as we learn more.
