Behavior Plan

Behavior Plan

My style of classroom management follows the principles contained in the book, Assertive Discipline by Lee Canter.  I hold the children accountable for the choices they make in behavior.  Our classroom rules are simple:  Follow directions, Keep your hands and feet to yourself, and Speak only in a kind way.

The children are rewarded for choosing to follow these simple rules with praise,  and even extra recess!  Children who choose to not follow the rules follow a schedule of consequences:  First, a verbal warning from the teacher, then five minutes working apart from the group, ten minutes working apart from the group, and if necessary, writing in the Behavior Log.  Entries in the Behavior Log  must be signed by a parent.

I have found that the Behavior Log is seldom used.  Most of the children choose appropriate behavior most of the time.  A verbal warning is usually enough of a reminder to help children choose appropriate behaviors.

This plan sounds strong but it is very easy to initiate and simple for the children to follow.  By following the rules, everyone gets more opportunity to participate in class, there are fewer interruptions, and if the work gets done, we all get extra recess.
