Mrs. Phalan's Class

Classroom Philosophy

It is an honor and a privilege to have your child in my class.  Third grade is a year of transition.  Learning takes place very differently than it did in the former grades.  Your child will need to learn to become responsible for his or her work, effort, belongings, and behavior.  No longer will your child be learning to read, but rather, will now begin the lifelong challenge of reading to learn.  I will set very high expectations for your child and then equip him or her with the tools to meet or exceed these expectations.  With your help, we can help your child feel confident, satisfied, happy, and very proud of him or herself.

Children are expected to read for pleasure for at least 20 minutes each night.  Whenever your child finishes a book, the parent should complete a reading verification form and return it to school the next day.  All children are expected to read 25 books by June - this is 2.5 books per month.  The top readers (more than 25 books) have a special luncheon with me in June.
