Birthdays

Free illustration: Birthday, Happy Birthday, Balloons - Free Image ...

Birthdays are very special occasions and we love celebrating them in first grade with our friends! In accordance with the Canton Public School initiative of promoting a healthier lifestyle, becoming more sensitive to student food allergies and health issues, as well as to recognize our communities diversity, I am asking that you DO NOT send in a special snack.

Instead of sending in a special snack, I would like you to choose one of the following:

purchase a book for the classroom or school library

donate items for recess time such as jump ropes, balls, and hula hoops

send in stickers, pencils, bookmarks, sidewalk chalk, or highlighters

purchase a board game that can be played during indoor recess

donate money to the CAPE in our classes name

I am also requesting that you do not send invitations to school for any off-campus celebrations unless they are for all the students.  Children of this age do not understand exclusion and feelings are hurt very easily.  Thank you for understanding.

We will celebrate all summer birthdays in June (see below).

Valentine's Day

We will enjoy a Valentine Celebration in class with a special craft and story.  The main emphasis will be on delivering and reading our Valentine cards.  It's so much fun to hear first-graders read the silly poems and sayings!  I will send home a class list so that your child can start writing his/her classmates' names on the envelopes and  sign each card.  This is also a nice way to practice our printing skills!

100th Day

In first grade we count all the school days throughout the year.  This allows us to understand place value (hundreds, tens, ones) in a basic and practical way.  On the 100th day of school, we will do hundreds of math, reading, and writing activities.  The children will be asked to complete a 100 Day Project. We will also try to collect 100 can goods for The Canton Food Pantry. The whole day will be one great big celebration!!

We will celebrate all summer birthdays in June.  A note will go home reserving a date for your child. (See birthday message at the top of this page.)

We will also have an end-of-the-year celebration during the last week of school. We will be ending the school year with a class kickball game. What a great way to show our SHINE philosophy!
