Summer Reading Program

For Students Entering Grades 6, 7, & 8 in September, 2009

When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature.  If I were a young person today, trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just as I did when I was young.”     ~  Maya Angelou

Dear Students and Parents,

Research tells us that the more children read, the better they read.  And the more children read outside of school, the better they perform in school.  The Galvin Middle School believes that learning is a year-round endeavor and that summer vacation presents unique opportunities for increased learning.  Students are encouraged to take advantage of those opportunities to extend their literacy skills.

By reading and discussing books and articles with your children, and by visiting libraries, parents and other family members can make reading an important part of home life.

Please find attached the summer reading guidelines for students entering grades 6, 7, & 8.

We hope that this list of recommended books encourages everyone to read during the summer vacation.

Happy reading!
