Unit Six
Review and Extension of Whole Number Operations
Students will explore addition and subtraction using the diagrams introduced in Unit 4. From there we will learn a procedure for subtraction called the trade first method. More info will come along with this with homework. The end of the unit will introduce mathematical stories requiring the use of multiplication and division strategies. The students will be encouraged to act out multiplication and division stories with manipulatives.
Vocabulary for Unit 6
trade-first method (algorithm)- a procedure for subtracting multidigit numbers. The trade first method is similar to the traditional subtraction method; however all of the regrouping is done before the problem is solved.
array- A rectangular arrangement of objects in rows and columns. Arrays are an important learning link in understanding the connection between multiplication and division.
multiples- repeated groups of the same amount. For example 2,4,6,8,10.. are all multiples of 2 because 2x1=2, and so on.
Remainder- The amount left over when things are divided into equal parts. If 20 pencils are divided equally between 6 people, each person gets 3 and there are 2 left over. The 2 is the remainder.
For Fun
Encourage your child to share equally objects. For example we have 16 pieces of gum. Share equally among 4 children, or 5 children.
Or plan goody bags for 6 children with 3,4 ,6 pieces of something in them. How many do you need?
