Word Wall List
Children will be responsible for using accurate spelling of word wall words in their writing as they are added to the wall. The word wall words are chanted and used each day through games and activities. They are often part of our weekly workboard activities (centers) where we "Read and Write Around the Room". Please encourage your child to practice the words daily and review them often! Each Monday, the words are introduced as part of our word study and spelling lesson. With practice, they will begin to use them correctly in their writing. We will keep our words in a "word bag". The bag may come home to review. Please remember to return it to school.
The word wall is a designated section of the room that is devoted to the display and study of words. The word wall is one of the first references the children will use in our classroom. The words are grouped alphabetically. Our word wall is interactive-we "DO" the word wall! By doing the word wall, we can use both visual and auditory information.
Our word wall words for the first few weeks of school will be based on the names of the children in our class. In subsequent weeks, we will be adding words from the Dolch high frequency word lists (click here to access a complete list of all the Dolch words, including nouns).
"Doing A Word Wall" means:
adding words gradually (usually 5-7 words per week)
making words accessible (they are where children can see them)
words are selectively chosen (really common words which children use a lot in their writing and words that are important to our first grade class)
practicing the words by chanting and writing them (through games, chants, and activities)
doing a variety of review activities (to allow children to have ownership of the words and to assess knowledge)
making sure that word wall words are spelled correctly in any writing children do
The goal of the word wall is to learn and spell high frequency words, learn word patterns to decode and encode (spell) lots of other words, and transfer word knowledge to the children's own reading and writing.
Our class names that appear on the word wall this year are:
Anthony Brian Brynn Conor Corinne Dillon Fay James Jediah Levana Luke Madeline Marshall Nicholas Parker Sigal Sophia Stella
