English Language Arts

A comprehensive reading program provides several kinds of reading and writing within and across the curriculum. In a comprehensive reading program, we are focused on both programs and outcomes and ongoing assessment informs our instructional choices. We develop partnerships among school, parents, families, and our community. These partnerships are supported through communication and involvement. Through the use of best practices, which are  research-based, we help children develop reading skills to foster a life-long love of reading, This is accomplished through the following core components:

·         modeled reading

·         read-aloud

·         shared reading

·         guided reading

·         independent reading

·         modeled writing

·         shared writing

·         guided writing

·         independent writing

Within our classroom, the children are immersed in high-quality literature each day and receive direct instruction. They are grouped in a variety of ways, sometimes by ability, sometimes by interest. They begin at their developmental level and move forward from there. Activities are planned in order to encompass individual learning styles.

Our class will also be participating in a program called "CONNECT: Bringing Family Literacy to Life through Literature Backpacks. Click here to learn more about the program.
