The Red Tailed Hawk
By Chris Matthews
A cool animal that I learned about is the red-tailed hawk. The red Tailed Hawk belongs to the bird group and the hawk family. It is a bird of prey meaning it eats other animals. The hawk has a yellow beak with brown feathers and at the very bottom of the tail is red. This animal is common here in the United States.
You can find this animal in grasslands or marshes & at the Nature Trail at the Luce school in Canton. Some even live in city parks. A red tailed hawk habitat includes trees, rocks, dirt, twigs and other animals. They fly at different heights in the sky.
Humans have diets so do animals. The red tailed hawk’s diet is rodents, rabbits, snakes, and lizards. It defends itself by not letting animals come near them. Hawks won’t harm you if you don’t harm them they won’t harm you.
Hawks live to be 10-21 years old. The Tailed Hawk is born from an egg. They care for their young by protecting them and getting food right away. The father and mother both care for the babies in the nest.
One of many interesting facts that I learned was that their eyesight is 8 times better than humans are. Next time you are outside look for a large bird with a red tail with wings pointed up, and you will be surprised how many hawks are here in Canton.
