Red Backed Salamander

There are a lot of interesting facts about the Red backed Salamander. The Red backed Salamander is part of the Amphibian and vertebrae classification. Its back is red, and also its cheeks are red, but the rest of its body is black. That is why it is called the Red backed Salamander. Its height is two and a half to five inches long. It is a small animal, with very moist skin. The Red backed salamander is very common so you can find it in a lot of places including Canton.
You would find the Red backed salamander’s habitat very surprising. Like it lives in North America, South America, Asia, Europe and Australia. They use the leaf litter on the ground, rotten logs, and rocks to make their home. They can be fond in deciduous forests and moist places.
The Red backed salamander eats bugs, little fish, spiders and snails. They get their food by catching it with their tongue. They mark their territory and hide underneath logs. Its life span maximum is 10 years and its average is 7 years. They don’t live for a very long time. The female lays 3 to 14 eggs under rotten wood. She stays with her eggs until they hatch. They are born on land and do not have an aquatic stage.
Doing this report on the Red backed salamander I learned a lot of interesting facts. Like they live every where except Antarctica. Also they provide food for other animals. His or her future isn’t very hopeful. The reason is because of acid rain is polluting ponds and lakes where these salamanders live. Acid rain makes it hard for salamanders to survive. I think the Red backed salamander is an amazing animal.
