"The American Goldfinch"

By Kolleen White

Have you ever seen the little golden and black bird at a feeder or in a tree? Well it is an American Goldfinch. The American Goldfinch has jet-black wings and a jet-black forehead. The rest of the body is golden but the feathers above the tail. Those feathers are white. Since it is a bird it is a vertebrae. That means it has a backbone. The American Goldfinch is 4 to 6 1/2inches.The American Goldfinch is also very common.

A lot of things make up the American Goldfinch’s habitat. The trees it lives in and its nest. Their nests are made of twigs, leaves, and ribbons. Of course they have the eggs too. The American Goldfinch lives in a lot of places such as gardens and woods. You can find them in these places all over North American.

Most of the American Goldfinches eat seed, grasses, and bugs. When a Goldfinch feels threatened it will show very little aggressiveness except for an alarming call. The American Goldfinch is sociable at all times of the year. As you probably know the American Goldfinch is born from an egg. Before the eggs hatch the mother Goldfinch will sit on the eggs to keep them warm. Then when they hatch the mother will teach them to fly and survive on their own.

I learned a lot about the American Goldfinch. The facts that I find most interesting are that this bird is a songbird. It only takes the eggs 12 to 14 days to hatch. Remember black wings and forehead, yellow body white tail feathers. Put those together and you get the American Goldfinch.
