Garter Snakes

By Sam Burke

A Garter Snake is a type of reptile and is cold blooded. It has black and yellow scaly skin. The skin goes in a scaly type of pattern. It can measure up to two or three feet long. The red sided garter snake is the only type of garter snake that loves to swim. When a baby garter snake is born, the mother does not bring it food. The baby must learn to hunt on its own as it gets older. Garter snakes enemies are hawks, eagles, skunks, and foxes.

When one is hibernating it finds a warm place to hide. In a deep hole, in a cave, or under rocks.

Then they go into a deep winter sleep. Here they stay until warm weather comes.

The Garter Snake also can pick up smells from the air with their tongues.

A snake flicking with its tongue, is like you sniffing with your nose. Also the snake has no arms or legs. How one moves is it slides on its belly. Most of the garter snake skin looks slimy, but it isn’t, it is very dry.
