The
Wellness Department is the unification of Health Education,
Physical Education and Family and Consumer Science Education.
Students will be exposed to a variety of learning experiences
in the classroom and through physical activity that promote
and encourage an active and healthy lifestyle. Concepts in
Wellness will be explored in each curriculum to help students
understand the importance of being a healthy and productive
member of society.
Students in grades 9 and 10 will take one semester of health
education and one semester of physical education each year.
Students in grades 11 and 12 participate in our “Choice”
program where they select four, one term courses each year.
Examples of “Choice” courses are Multicultural Foods, Men and
Women’s Health Issues, CPR/First Aid, Personal Fitness, Yoga,
Stability Ball Fitness, Sociology of Sport, Tennis and Team
Sports.
Participation in Wellness is required during all four years of
high school.
In this course students will have an opportunity to experience and develop an interest in life long activities. A variety of activities will be presented to students with information on the history of the games, rules and regulations of play, and how to keep score. There will be discussion on the theory of play and the importance of fair play. Students will be able to answer the essential question; what are the different types of recreational activities that will be of benefit to my quality of life and will benefit my physical, social, and emotional wellness?
This class is designed for students wishing to participate in various team sports. Students will learn the rules, regulations, and skills required to play volleyball, lacrosse, speedball, field hockey, floor hockey, flag football, and basketball. Sportsmanship and safety will be emphasized in all units.

This class is designed for students who enjoy walking for cardiovascular health. Students participating in this class will learn about types of walking shoes, the difference between hiking and walking, stretching techniques, the importance of a pedometer, and the physical value of walking for your overall wellness.

This course is designed to be a culinary guide to countries and cultures around the world. Students will prepare a variety of foods, while at the same time learning geography, traditions, holiday customs, exotic and ethnic ingredients of the countries. This will provide the student with a greater understanding of other cultures and their foods.
This course provides an introduction to the study of sports as a social institution and an element of our culture. Topics of discussion include the role of sport in society, sport “heroes”, classic sport movies, women in sports, and the variations in sports across other cultures.

This class is designed for students who are interested in honest, open discussions concerning the physical, social, and emotional needs of young men and women. Topics will include personal health care, reproductive health, healthy and unhealthy relationships, dating abuse, depression, suicide, and making healthy decisions. It is our intent to foster a safe and respectful environment in which young men and women are able to talk and share their concerns, thoughts, and feelings concerning current health topics.
Games Activity Term II
This course will involve playing games that you’ve experienced in Kindergarten through high school. Learn how to increase your fitness levels while having fun. What is a game? Does there always have to be a winner and a loser? What games do they play in other countries? Students will have the opportunity to design their own game for the class to try.
Safety and Self Defense Activity Term II

This class is designed for students that want to learn more about their personal safety and basic self defense. The components of the course will be taught in the classroom and in self defense labs. Automobile safety, ATM/Bank safety, hotel safety, internet safety, street safety and self defense techniques/strategies will be covered in this course. There will also be guest speakers and demonstrations about personal safety and self defense.
Students participating in this course will learn ways to relax and refresh themselves by practicing a series of stretching and breathing techniques. Yoga is known to increase serenity, strength, and stamina. This is a lifelong activity that is very effective in reducing stress and increasing flexibility. Along with yoga, cardiovascular activities will be introduced to this course. A variety of activities will be incorporated to create an overall well-being. This class will be relaxing yet exciting and will leave you energized for the rest of the day!

Students participating in this course will be introduced to various fitness components. The components will be taught in both the classroom and in the exercise labs. Strength training principals, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, balance/proprioception, basic anatomy and physiology, agility, and weight control will be covered in this course. Exercise sessions will include weight lifting, plyometrics, circuit training, walking, jogging, dynamic stretching, static stretching, agility’s, physioball aerobics, and fitness games.
This course will explore, evaluate and discuss current health topics affecting the human population. We will explore how the media influences our decisions concerning personal health and create strategies for applying this information into our daily lives. Topics of discussion may include cancer, addictions, sexually transmitted diseases, eating disorders, and sports nutrition.

This course is designed to help students prepare a variety of foods that follow dietary guidelines and are quick, easy, and fun. Students will learn the importance of making intelligent choices when selecting foods, and how nutrition enhances your ability to be active in lifelong activities. Students will prepare such products as guilt-free snacks, low fat meals, and foods to prepare while in college or on their own.

This course will discuss the issues and challenges you will be facing after high school. Whether you go on to college, the military, or out into the work force, your life will never be the same again. Topics of discussion will include the responsibilities of managing your money, living on your own or with roommates, time management, lifetime fitness, relationships, stress management, friends, personal wellness, and the future.
Health Promotion Classroom Term IV
This course will explore a variety of media concepts that can be used to promote health and wellness. You will choose a wellness topic and design the avenue on how to get the message out to your peers. Use your creativity, art skills, writing skills or sense of humor to send a message. Two thirds of the course will be in the classroom and one third will be activities that emphasize the importance of health and wellness.
Net Sports Activity Term IV

Students participating in this class will have an opportunity to learn several net games and racquet skills that can be applied to a variety of activities. Examples of games to be played are badminton, pickleball, volleyball and tennis. Strategy, fair play and sportsmanship will also be discussed.
