The JFK "Word of the Week" Program

Each week, grades one and two had a new word added to their vocabulary; likewise, grades three-five.  The purpose of the "Word of the Week" program was to have the students add new words to their written and spoken communication.  We exposed them to "root" words, prefixes and suffixes as well as word etymology.  Hopefully, they now know the meaning, part of speech, and how to use the word in a sentence.

We strongly encourage you to continue to review these words at home with your children, use them in your conversation, highlight them in books, magazines or newspapers, etc.  Listed below are the words that we have covered this year.  Does your child know them all?

Grades 1 and 2: shriek, rapid, grip, zany, sum, entire, decay, hardy, jiffy, ancient, modern, hilarious, defend, office, inauguration, elect, fidgety, convenient, launch, digits, ascend, numerous and all the parts of speech.

Grades 3 – 5: locomotion, evidence, jester, dominate, inverse, decibel, flamboyant, bogus, tattered, pathetic, gullible, fortify, solemnly, affirm, inauguration, hydroponics, mortified, erupt, triad, centennial, median and all the parts of speech.
