Health Screening

Hearing, Vision and Postural screening

In April 2009, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health amended their regulations on Physical Examination of School Children, 105 CMR 200.00, to improve the screening and monitoring of the health assessment of children across the Commonwealth. The postural screening remains the same as in the past for Grades 5-9. The hearing and vision screening guidelines were modified as listed below:

  • Hearing Screening – Students in grades K-3, 7 and 10 annually

  • Vision Screening – Students in grades K-5, 7 and 10 annually

If at any time there is a concern about your child’s hearing, vision or posture, please contact the school nurse to schedule a screening.

You may access the regulation, 105 CMR 200.500, on the link above which is the Massachusetts Department of Public Health School Health Services Unit, or contact your child’s school nurse for more information.

Height, Weight and Body Mass Index

Another significant change that the Massachusetts Department of Public Health made to the regulations on Physical Examination of School is the requirement of screening for height and weight and the recording and reporting of the BMI for all students in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10 (or of comparable age).  Parents and legal guardians may request, in writing, that their child not participate in the program.
