IAC InfoTrac/SearchBank Databases

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts provides the Galvin Middle School with access to the five commercial periodical databases:

• Contemporary Authors (Dec. 1998): Access to biographical and bibliographical information on approximately 100,000 U.S. and international authors.
• General Reference Center (1980-date): Use this general interest database to search magazines, reference books,and newspapers for information on current events, popular culture, the arts and sciences, sports and more.
• Expanded Academic Index (1980-date): Use this database to find scholarly information on astronomy, religion. law, history, psychology, humanities, sociology, communications and general sciences.
• Health Reference Center (1994-date): Use this database to find articles on fitness, pregnancy, medicine, nutrition, diseases, public health, alcohol and drug abuse, prescription, etc.
• General Business File (1982-date):Access to research all business and management topics. Includes directory listing for over 150,000 companies  as well as investment analysis' reports on major companies and industries.

Online Searching Strategies

 

Problem with a Key Word Search? Synonyms: Use a related term or a word that means the same or almost the same thing as the word you are searching. A reference tool called a thesaurus might  help you find synonyms.  Example: dirt = soil Variant Spellings: Many words also have a British spelling. Try both spellings. Example:  favor=favour Capitalization: Some databases are case sensitive to capitalization. Try both lower-case and capitalized versions.  Example: internet=Internet Plurals: Certain key words are best searched in the singular while others provide better results if the plural form is used. Try both forms.   Example: elephant = elephants
