This full-year, five-credit course provides students with the basic knowledge of bookkeeping/accounting procedures, including analyzing and journalizing business transactions; worksheets; preparing financial statements; and recording adjusting and closing entries. Checking accounts, payroll accounting and an introduction to computerized accounting systems is also included. Emphasis is placed on service and merchandising businesses in a sole proprietorship or corporate setting. Recommended for students in grades 10 through 12, who are exploring a career in business or accounting. All students, regardless of the career they choose, can benefit from accounting instruction in their own personal business affairs. (Prerequisite: Computer Applications I)
This course introduces students to computers as a production tool and empowers them with a set of school- and work-based competencies necessary to be functional and productive citizens in an ever-increasing technological society. Students will use the Microsoft Office Suite comprised of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Units covered will include personal and professional correspondence, basic desktop publishing, reports, flyers, tables, spreadsheet design and use, and presentations. The Internet will be used in a variety of projects.
Desktop Publishing Course acquaints students with graphic-design techniques, principles of page layout and design, and desktop publishing terminology and applications. Students will create a variety of documents such as flyers, brochures, newsletters, and student business cards, using industry standards, desktop publishing software, graphics, and effective design conventions. Students will also become familiar with style sheets, templates, and importing materials created in other software programs. Students will learn the concepts of effective document design and how these concepts assist effective communication. Students will have opportunity to utilize the skills they learn by creating documents for various school activities.
This course will provide students with an understanding of the importance of entrepreneurship and small businesses to the economy and an understanding of the skills and characteristics needed to be a successful entrepreneur. Students will study entrepreneurship as a career choice, learning how to create, own, and manage a business. Topics covered include marketing, economics, competition, communication, and ethical and legal issues.
PC Maintenance & Repair This hands-on PC repair course familiarizes students with standard PC hardware and software systems. Students will dismantle and reassemble a PC, learning about industry standard hardware systems and components including CPUs, system memory, video adapters, sound cards, storage drives, network adapters, internal and external modems, as well as expansion technologies such as SCSI, USB, and Firewire. Students also become familiar with troubleshooting standard software systems and receive experience troubleshooting the MS Windows Operating System and other software problems for end-users.
This course is designed to help students manage their resources and to make sound personal financial decisions. Topics covered will include creating financial goals, earning an income, budgeting, banking services, wise shopping, using credit, insurance, investments, and income taxes. Personal Finance is a course that is of value for all high school students regardless of their ultimate career choice.
Web Design As an introduction to building web sites, this course covers the design and development of web pages incorporating text, digital images, and sound. Applications, languages, and programs such as HTML, FTP, and FrontPage will be utilized. Graphics from digital cameras, scanners, JPEGs, and Gifs will be imported and manipulated through the use of software such as Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Flash. Culminating projects will include the opportunity to develop student web sites. |
